In an old interview with Siddharth Kannan, Kunika had spoken openly about her six-year relationship with Kumar Sanu. She said that they considered each other as husband and wife. They first met in Ooty, where Kunika was shooting for a project and Kumar Sanu was enjoying a vacation with his sister and niece.
Kunika Sadanand said that one night, Kumar Sanu was very drunk and in despair, started talking about jumping from the hotel window. Kunika, her sister and niece stopped them. This emotional moment brought the two closer. Kunika said, “I reminded them of their responsibilities. After that, they started living next door to me. We used to share meals with each other and I also helped them lose weight.”

Kunika kept the relationship a secret to respect Kumar Sanu’s family. They were only seen together in stage shows, where Kunika would choose their clothes and arrange their performances. But later, she was heartbroken when she came to know about some things. Kumar Sanu’s then wife Rita Bhattacharya came to know about the relationship. Kunika said, “Rita attacked my car with a hockey stick and shouted outside my house. She wanted money for her children, which was not wrong.” Eventually, the relationship broke down. Kunika said, “I considered him my husband and supported him in every way.” This old story has now come up again.
