Bruce Glover, James Bond ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ villain
Bruce Glover, the veteran actor best known for portraying the assassin Mr. Wint in the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever, has passed away at the age of 92. His son, actor Crispin Hellion Glover, confirmed the news on Instagram on March 16, 2025. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Born on May 2, 1932, Bruce Herbert Glover had a long and successful career in Hollywood. He appeared in numerous films and TV shows, leaving a lasting impact on the entertainment industry. His most famous role was in Diamonds Are Forever, where he played the sinister yet quirky villain, Mr. Wint, alongside Putter Smith as Mr. Kidd.
Bruce Glover’s journey into acting was not a conventional one. He entered the workforce at just six years old, earning 60 cents a week by delivering groceries after school. After high school, he played football for Wright Junior College before being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War in 1953. Following his military service, his football career was derailed by malaria, which led him to explore acting.
In 1955, Bruce auditioned for a play and discovered his passion for the performing arts. This marked the beginning of a career that spanned theater, television, and film. He went on to perform in Broadway productions such as The Lion in Winter, Mother Courage and Her Children, and The Night of the Iguana.
In his mid-30s, Bruce Glover moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in film and television. He quickly found success, landing guest roles in popular TV shows like Battlestar Galactica and Gunsmoke. However, it was his role in Diamonds Are Forever that solidified his place in cinematic history.
The 1971 James Bond film, starring Sean Connery as 007, featured Bruce Glover as Mr. Wint, one half of the notorious assassin duo. The characters’ sinister yet comical nature made them stand out among Bond villains. One of the film’s most memorable moments came when James Bond defeated Mr. Wint by strapping a bomb between his legs and throwing him off a ship.
Bruce Glover’s performance in Diamonds Are Forever was widely praised. In a past interview, he recalled how legendary Bond actor Sir Roger Moore complimented him on the film.
“The final moment in the film where Sean Connery does that rude thing, pushing the hoo-ha up my yaha and giving that character his final great moment, is the biggest laugh in the movie,” Bruce once said.
Beyond Diamonds Are Forever, Bruce Glover built an impressive career with roles in films like Walking Tall (1973) and Chinatown (1974), directed by Roman Polanski. He also made notable television appearances in Perry Mason and Hawaii Five-O. His dedication to acting never faded, as he continued working on various projects throughout his life.
Bruce Glover’s son, Crispin Glover, best known for playing George McFly in the Back to the Future franchise, paid tribute to his father on Instagram. He shared images from Bruce’s career, including his Perry Mason appearance and a scene from Chinatown.
Although Bruce Glover is no longer with us, his impact on Hollywood remains. His memorable performances, particularly as Mr. Wint, continue to entertain fans of classic cinema.
As the film industry mourns the loss of this talented actor, his legacy will live on through his remarkable work on stage and screen.
Rest in peace, Bruce Glover (1932-2025).
