But, due to an accident in a film, she became a villain.
Lalita Pawar started her film career in 1928 with the silent film ‘Raja Harishchandra’. In this film, she played the role of a child artist. After this, she started working in talkies in 1934, by which time she had become a famous actress. She used to work in more than 12 films in a year. But, an accident that happened during a scene changed her whole life.
Lalita Pawar has worked in about 700 films in her acting career. From 1928 to 1997, she played many such characters that became immortal. During her time, she appeared in important roles in every film. But, working in the film named ‘Jang-e-Azadi’ proved to be so difficult for her that she could not become a heroine for the rest of her life. Lalita, who played the heroine, was forced to play a supporting role.
A slap forced her to become a villain
In 1942, Lalita Pawar was working with Bhagwan Dada in the film ‘Jag-e-Azadi’. In one scene in the film, Bhagwan Dada had to slap Lalita Pawar. But, the slap hit her so hard that Lalita Pawar’s face became lame. After this, she stayed away from acting for three years and underwent treatment. However, due to a ruptured nerve in one of her eyes, she did not recover completely. After this, she stopped getting heroine roles and she soon became a villain. She mainly played the role of a cruel mother-in-law.
Ramanand Sagar’s work in ‘Ramayana’ was appreciated
Apart from films, Lalita Pawar also worked on TV. She won a lot of praise for playing the character of Manthara in Ramanand Sagar’s show ‘Ramayana’. She breathed life into the character of Manthara. She has played all kinds of characters in her career. In the 1972 film ‘Bombay to Goa’, she also played such a character with Amitabh Bachchan that people went crazy after watching it.
