In the ever-expanding world of Indian web series, Kerala Crime Files Season 2 stands tall as a rare sequel that not only lives up to its predecessor but dares to dig deeper. Directed by Ahammed Khabeer and written by Bahul Ramesh, this Malayalam-language crime thriller returns with familiar faces—Aju Varghese and Lal—while introducing new characters and a fresh mystery that’s just as compelling as the first.
Season 2 shifts its narrative focus to the disappearance of Civil Police Officer Ambili Raju (played by Indrans), a respected yet enigmatic figure at the Kaniyarvila police station. Unlike the first season, which opened with a murder and a clear suspect, this installment takes its time to build suspense. The mystery unfolds gradually, allowing viewers to absorb the nuances of each character and their motivations.
The story kicks off amid a departmental reshuffle, with whispers of corruption and hidden alliances. When Ambili vanishes without a trace, SHO Kurian Avaran (Lal) and SI Noble (Arjun Radhakrishnan) are tasked with uncovering the truth. Their investigation leads them through a maze of secrets, lies, and unexpected alliances.
Aju Varghese reprises his role with a quiet intensity that complements the show’s grounded tone. Though his screen time is limited compared to Season 1, his presence adds continuity and emotional weight. Lal, on the other hand, delivers a standout performance as the seasoned SHO Kurian. His portrayal is restrained yet commanding, capturing the moral complexity of a man caught between duty and doubt.
Arjun Radhakrishnan, as SI Noble, is a revelation. His transformation from a greenhorn officer to a determined investigator is one of the season’s most satisfying arcs. His chemistry with Lal adds depth to the procedural elements of the story.
Perhaps the most unexpected delight of Season 2 is the casting of Indrans and Harisree Ashokan—both known for their comedic roles—in deeply serious, layered characters. Indrans, as Ambili Raju, is magnetic even in his absence. His character is slowly revealed through flashbacks and testimonies, painting a portrait of a man who may not be as righteous as he seems.
Harisree Ashokan plays Ayyappan, Ambili’s ex-wife’s current husband and a former convict. His performance is subtle, menacing, and emotionally resonant. The scenes between Indrans and Ashokan are some of the most powerful in the series.
Bahul Ramesh’s screenplay is a masterclass in restraint. Rather than relying on jump scares or dramatic twists, the narrative builds tension through character development and atmosphere. The pacing is deliberate, allowing the story to breathe and the audience to engage with the investigation on a deeper level.
Director Ahammed Khabeer resists the temptation to sensationalize. Instead, he crafts a world that feels authentic and lived-in. The police station, the streets of Thiruvananthapuram, and even the dogs that appear throughout the series contribute to the show’s immersive quality.
The cinematography by Jithin Stanislaus captures the moody, overcast palette of the series perfectly. Each frame feels intentional, enhancing the sense of unease that permeates the narrative. Hesham Abdul Wahab’s music is understated but effective, heightening tension without overwhelming the scenes.
Editing by Mahesh Bhuvanend ensures that the story flows smoothly, even when the plot takes its time to unfold. The production design, too, deserves praise for its attention to detail and realism.
Kerala Crime Files Season 2 is a rare sequel that doesn’t just ride on the success of its predecessor—it builds upon it. With a gripping mystery, nuanced characters, and a commitment to realism, it’s a must-watch for fans of intelligent crime dramas. Whether you’ve seen Season 1 or not, this installment stands strong on its own.
