In the early seventies, Deepti Naval was studying at Hunter College in New York University, Midtown Manhattan. At that time, she started a radio program called Rang Mahal on the radio. She hosted this program. In this program, old Hindi songs were played that Deepti liked. This program was for the NRI people there.

Talking about the first interview, she said
Deepti wanted to invite Bollywood celebrities for this show. First actor Sunil Dutt came to this program and then Raj Kapoor attended. Deepti was a fan of Raj Kapoor. She had watched many of his films with great interest. When she reached to interview him. Talking about the first interview, she said, “Raj Kapoor was a very nice person. It was easy to chat with him. He loved to talk about his life and work.”
After that, Deepti met Raj Kapoor even after returning to Mumbai. Raj Kapoor was present as the chief guest at Deepti’s birthday party. She said, “I felt very proud and very happy that he came to my apartment, which I had bought at that time. He wished me well. My father was also present at this time.”
Deepti also attended Raj Kapoor’s funeral. Recounting the incident, she said, “I took a cab, a rickshaw, whatever I could find, and went to his funeral. His body was being cremated and the pyre was already burning. I stood there, silent and stunned. Suddenly I realized that I was the only woman there. I realized that women were not allowed to go beyond a certain limit during the funeral. But unknowingly, I had crossed this limit to bid Rajji a final farewell.”
